Urban melancholy, photography by Alexander Schoenberg

Hamburg has about 2,500 bridges, more than Venice and Amsterdam combined, making it the most bridge-filled city in Europe. The bridges characterize the cityscape of Hamburg and for me they carry a strong symbolism, they connect two shores with each other or make a street possible, where otherwise one would have to end, often being architectural masterpieces that speak for themselves. The effect of a bridge is reinforced in my opinion, when in autumn a dense fog occurs, which fades out all the details in the background and hover the building for a few hours and make the urban scenes appear melancholy.
